I followed Kiwi's recommendations to wash the jacket, let it air-dry on a hanger and spray it down outdoors, allowing a several-hour drying time between coats and a final 24-hour drying time to cure thoroughly and lose the smell of the spray. It worked!

Made in Havre de Grace, Md., have been my go-to deck boots for launching my skiff from her trailer and other shoreline duties. I've used them from May into October for the past 10 years. The Safety-Lok outsole is plenty slip-resistant, the 16-inch height is adequate for these uses, and with insoles, the boots are comfortable all day on the water. For wide feet, order one size up.

PowerPro Super 8 Slick is braided under extreme tension from eight yarns of Spectra fiber, making it extremely strong for its diameter and slick for casting distance. I've fished a couple of reels spooled with 10-lb-test (diameter equivalent to 2-lb-test mono) over the past year, and it delivers on its promises, including good resistance to wind knots.

The 3-inch Fat Sam Mullet from 12 Fathom Jigs is the most flexible and active 3-inch paddletail soft plastic body I have found to date. Rigged on a short-shank 1/4-ounce jig head, it has worked well on both rockfish and speckled trout, fished alone and under a rattle float. The best colors have been Silver Mullet and Greengo Shad.

DOA AirHead

The DOA AirHead is a versatile new 5-inch jerkbait with a hollow body and a beaver tail, another product of the ingenious Captain Mark Nichols, owner of DOA Lures. The AirHead can be fished on the surface, suspended or deep, Texas-rigged or on a jighead. Nichols covers multiple rigging options in a 12-minute YouTube video available on the company's website, www.doalures.com.

4-inch Paddle Tail Shad

DOA also has a new 4-inch Paddle Tail Shad body that is anything but simple. Like the AirHead, it has a hollow, flexible body leading to a large paddle. There's a slot on the dorsal side to conceal the hook point when Texas-rigged, for which DOA recommends one of the company's 3.5/0 longneck hooks with a 1/8-ounce pinch weight. I have found that this tail swims with a seductive body roll that rockfish and even big white perch like when it's fished on a 1/4-ounce DOA jig head. The 4-inch Shad was too new at press time for price information, but it will be available at www.doalures.com by the time you read this review.

Little Wolf Spoon

Well-balanced metal spoons are underrated choices for a variety of inshore Chesapeake fish. The Little Wolf Spoon wobbler from Mepps is a good one, especially in colors like Silver Chartreuse, Hot Tiger and Hot Green Chartreuse Pickerel and white perch like the 1/4-ounce size; try the 2/5-ounce model for schoolie rockfish and speckled trout. 3/4-ounce Lil Bunker

The 3/4-ounce Lil Bunker from Specialized Baits has become a primary jig for working restoration oyster reefs for both rockfish and large white perch. It falls quickly with a sweet little flutter, so it is effective for ripping along the bottom in 15 to 25 feet of water. The single Siwash hook minimizes snags on shells, though it is important to keep the line tight so as to twitch it up hard the moment it touches the bottom. Try it with a Teaser Fly from Specialized Baits, rigged 12 inches above on a dropper loop. It also works well for casting to breaking fish.

Spike-It Scent Markers

Why do Chesapeake fish like garlic? Hard to say, but there's no denying that "hot-rodding" a soft plastic lure body with bright, contrasting colors can turn fish on. Enter the value pack of Spike-It Scent Markers, garlic-flavored in red, orange, blue and chartreuse. The pack makes a great stocking stuffer. I recently used the chartreuse marker to color the back and tail of a pearl white DOA 4-inch Shad, and rockfish jumped all over it.
